More on the Gut - Brain Connection

3 years ago I had an experience that changed the way I see the world. Not only that, but changed the way I see myself.  Now, that sounds kind of dramatic, I know... but the journey I thought I was on (a cleansing diet, and learning about mind-body relaxation) could have never prepared me for what I experienced. It was a spiritual/psychological/physical experience that pretty much completely altered my view of things. At the time I was doing yoga, starting a cleansing diet and taking probiotics and incorporating them into my diet. Following this "perception changing" experience I had a strong intuition that the bacteria in my system played a key role. While I don't think I can attribute all of the changes I experienced to just this, I do think it was a major part. I've even theorized that bacteria can control our brains... (or our consciousness) to some extent. While it seemed radical to me three years ago to say that bacteria could "control our brains", now it seems that there are nearly weekly news releases on researchers releasing information on this exact topic. So now, yes, I say with a fair amount confidence that bacteria can alter human consciousness, alter mood states, contribute to anxiety and depression inflammation (or combat the fungus and yeast that can cause these conditions) and more. As I mentioned, I was also doing yoga and at the time also using cannabis and also had just begun to meditate. I quit using cannabis after this experience for a few personal reasons (and because I started experiencing similar "highs" spontaneously), but I definitely think there are things to be learned about how it affected my physiology too...but that's another part of the story. I now think there must have been a synergistic effect to all this which I hope to explore more here. I have tried to look at all of these things from a grounded scientific perspective in hopes that I could share some of it in a way that's useful. Anyway, check out this video from Elaine Hsiao.  She is a researcher from Cal Tech and she shares in basic terms how bacteria are vital to our health and can affect us mentally.

Just a personal note: There is nothing new under the sun. I am just attempting to present info. here that has helped me. I hope to present it in a clear way based on my experience with anxiety which was a spiritual, psychological and emotional awakening for me. In retrospect of this experience I have been reading as much as I could to come to a deeper and more grounded understanding of this seemingly mystical thing that happened to me (so that I could share it with you). I'm not a doctor or a scientist. Please know this is only my experience. Yours will obviously be different, but since my experience was so similar to others I've talked to, I am hoping this may be helpful or useful to you in some way. It's also a way that I hope to share the love with you. That is my purpose here.
