Cannabinoids and Endocannabinoids and their role in stress and balance

I have posted here and talked publicly quite a bit about "feeling high" at times after recovering my personal experience of anxiety...which I feel was only part of a larger experience of regaining balance and growing in my psychological and spiritual awareness.  Part of that experience was the fact that I was smoking cannabis occasionally before it. I didn't really like to get super high because it actually caused anxiousness in me, and what I was looking for was a way to relax. In addition to changing my diet to be healthier, working out etc.. I have spent a lot of time since researching everything from sound healing to candida diet to meditation and yoga and on and on.. because all of these things played a role for me.  This regained balance and health, that I experienced was so amazingly profound, that my goal since then was to try to research the things that I was doing, so that I could hopefully share tips here that might prove useful.

In a nutshell, I believe that the common thread was that all of these things (sound therapy, yoga, meditation, diet and possibly cannabis) is that they helped my body regain balance and equilibrium and basically let go of stress. In some cases, stress I didn't even know I had. Stress that was well below the surface (in my subconscious). Once the physical started to come into balance, I began to experience a psychological rebalancing too. Ultimately, the "me" I thought I was, had to change too.  It seems the body's natural cannabanoid system plays a major role in this common thread.

Cannabis or marijuana, consists of two main constituents... THC and Cannabis.  THC is the psychoactive compound, the part that makes a person "high", and CBD (cannabinoids) is the part that make a person feel mellow. THC can have benefits too other than the high, but in general can result in also feeling anxious or even in some cases contribute to psychosis.  CBD, however balances this out in the plant and is actually anti-anxiety or anti-psychosis. So there is a balance. Most modern strains of Cannabis have been engineered towards having more THC, because in an era of prohibition, people wanted to get high. Now as scientists and doctors are learning more, it seems there is a LOT more to the story than Cheech and Chong lead us to believe.

Here are some basic facts I have recently learned about the role of Cannabinoids in our body.

  • We have a Cannabinoid System built into our body
  • Endocannabinoids regulate a variety systems throughout our body
  • Endocannbinoids help us regulate stress, immune responses and inflammatory responses throughout the body.

Based on my experience, I personally think that plant based cannabindoids may also play a role in helping the body reduce or process stresses while helping a person regain a state of natural equilibrium. CBD's are not subject to prohibition and also now widely available from places like Amazon.

Here are some videos that contain more of the latest research about the system of cannabinoids in the body:

Key Quotes from Dr. Melamede:

"People in general are aware that Omega 3's are good for you and they inhibit various cardiovascular problems. What most people are not aware of is that they are participatory directly in the endocannabinoid system in that they make a variety of our endocannbinoids and they are part of the bigger picture of lipid metabolism of which  the endocannabinoid system is a central focal point."

"Cannabis, being now from my perspective and essential nutrient..by virtue of how it will turn down inflammatory responses and inhibit the aging process and the negative consequences of age related illnesses. Nobody dies from being old...they die from age related illnesses."

Key Quotes from Dr. Mark Ware:

"The cannabinoid signaling system is probably the most ubiquitous signaling system in the human body."No matter where people look they find the cannabinoid system in some kind of involvement, in modulation of some type of activity."

"If you think about clinical conditions when nerves are firing at times when you don't want them: Epilepsy, Neuropathic pain, muscle spasticity, one could even think of anxiety, some forms of psychosis as forms of abnormal, aberrant firing of neurons. A cannabinoid is the perfect drug to suppress that abnormal activity."

"Very strong evidence coming through in the role it plays in inflammation."

"There are ways we can use this (endocannabinoid system) without taking any drugs at all. Running raises your endogenous cannabinoid tone. ..I'm willing to put money on the table (if anyone wants to bet me) that Yoga, massage therapy, any form of complementary therapy that makes you feel that mild feeling of euphoria when you've had the treatment, is an endocannabinoid effect."

Here is a chart showing some of the benefits:

It seems that understanding and utilizing plant cannabinoids may help in not only reducing stress, but also treating a variety of ailments from inflammatory and immune diseases like Crohns, MS and arthritis to things like epilepsy and chronic pain.

Could this feeling I've described of being high, feeling blissful and connected to nature, God and the universe be our most natural state? I personally think so.. Here are some more links:

Just a personal note: There is nothing new under the sun. I am just attempting to present info. here that has helped me. I hope to present it in a clear way based on my experience with anxiety which was a spiritual, psychological and emotional awakening for me. In retrospect of this experience I have been reading as much as I could to come to a deeper and more grounded understanding of this seemingly mystical thing that happened to me (so that I could share it with you). I'm not a doctor or a scientist. Please know this is only my experience. Yours will obviously be different, but since my experience was so similar to others I've talked to, I am hoping this may be helpful or useful to you in some way. It's also a way that I hope to share the love with you. That is my purpose here.
