It's not just ProBiotics... It's what you eat (Gut Health and Mental Health)

Years ago I remember touring through Indiana with my music group and our host for the evening was a corn farmer. In the course of talking with him afterwards I learned that in order to keep weeds out  of their crops they sprayed the whole field with RoundUp. The whole field, I asked? Why doesn't it kill the corn? He explained that the corn was genetically modified It was easier and more profitable to treat the whole field this way. At the time I really didn't connect how this might affect humans physically, but I instinctively felt that I didn't wan't to eat foods that had been essentially soaked in the same weed killer I had used on my lawn. I started to make a point of eating more organic foods. (PS.. I don't use RoundUp on my lawn anymore either. I use this and it's organic and works better.)

I had seen in the last few years some articles on Glyphosate and how it could be related to digestive problems.  Recently however, I saw an article that also connected the chemical to not only digestive issues, but also to affecting the microbiota (bacteria) in our gut, which also potentially affects neurotransmitter chemicals and mental health, as well as our immunity, inflammation and a host of other things.

"Here's the quick backstory: Since chemical companies invented genetically engineered seeds designed to withstand heavy sprayings of glyphosate (RoundUp), global use of Roundup and related weed killers has jumped to nearly 900 million pounds applied annually. Glyphosate is a systemic chemical, meaning once sprayed, it travels up inside of the plants that people and animals eat. As more farm fields converted to GMO crops, federal regulators quietly increased the levels of Roundup allowed in your food, something that could be particularly tragic for your gut.





But there's more to the glyphosate-gut conundrum "The most important piece of the story is the disruption of serotonin in the gut," says Seneff. She says glyphosate can disrupt the gut's ability to create tryptophan, the building block of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter linked to happiness and well-being. Low serotonin levels have been linked to suicide, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other ailments."

So while it may be true that genetically modified foods may not be dangerous by virtue of the genetic modification, if they are modified so that they can have RoundUp or other pesticides sprayed on them directly there is a good chance this will affect the end product that you are eating. (Duh!)

Also, according to the video below, various bacteria prefer different foods.. Some prefer sugars, some prefer fats and some prefer fiber, whole fruits and vegetables.  Not only that, but the bacteria themselves can influence our cravings, tastes and desires for certain foods. In essence they are influencing our brains and bodies in a parasite-host style of relationship. Add to that, that they influence our moods and mental states and you have all the makings of a science fiction thriller. Seems to me it's best to make friends with the bacteria that have an interest in keeping us healthy and calm.

So just to sum up, while eating probiotic foods, drinks etc. is important, I have realized too that it's equally important to eat the foods that will support the health of my internal compost heap (gut bacteria) whole fruits and vegetables.

Just a personal note: There is nothing new under the sun. I am just attempting to present info. here that has helped me. I hope to present it in a clear way based on my experience with anxiety which was a spiritual, psychological and emotional awakening for me. In retrospect of this experience I have been reading as much as I could to come to a deeper and more grounded understanding of this seemingly mystical thing that happened to me (so that I could share it with you).
